Class description:
Learn the watercolor techniques Jean uses to create detailed nature and wildlife paintings. Classes are designed for beginner – intermediate watercolor artists. Drawing/sketching skills are not required. Students will follow Jean’s step by step examples and demonstrations to create a watercolor painting.
Additionally, Jean will discuss the importance of:
- designing a strong piece of art following composition rules
- keeping colors clean and fresh
- using complimentary color schemes
- creating harmony and unity between background and foreground
- getting your values right
Detailed techniques covered in class include:
- transferring your line drawing to watercolor paper
- masking off foreground areas to preserve whites
- creating wet into wet background washes
- re-working a background without introducing watermarks or faults
- achieving detailed foregrounds through the use of dry brush, pulling out color, charging in color, glazing, and toothbrush spattering
- adding the finishing touches such as the use of bleed proof white to soften edges and create depth, and spraying on color to emphasize lighting
Here's what some of Jean's former students are saying about her classes:
"I loved classes with Jean. She is a talented artist, wonderful teacher and has a world of patience with her students. I was amazed at her many creative techniques for undoing all my mistakes." ~ Vicki
"I spent almost a year and a half taking watercolor classes under Jean. The first class I didn't even know if I could paint. My first finished painting was so beautiful, it almost made me cry. My class quickly became the highlight of my week. Jean's classes are so much fun. You will be amazed at the beautiful art you can produce following her patient, relaxed instruction. If she was still here, I'd still be going to class!" ~ Tracey
"I would like to say to anyone considering watercolor classes with Jean, ‘You are really in for a treat!’ She has been a wonderful teacher who made us all feel like accomplished artists. She was most willing to share her knowledge and never made us feel uncomfortable even when we knew we had only painted blobs. Jean amazed me many times by being able to tell me exactly what I needed to do to make my painting come to life. She truly is an accomplished artist who has a gift for teaching and I am so glad I was able to sit under her direction." ~ Glenda
"If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at being creative, try taking watercolor classes with Jean. Your imagination will travel to many places and sights you have never seen. Enjoy Jean's talent, wit, and patience. I did!" ~ Rosemarie
"As one of Jean’s former students, I felt privileged to have had an opportunity to be associated with her, and learn from her. She allowed us to work at our own pace, but provided personal attention to each one individually. She is a great asset to any artistic program." ~ Rita
"I’d always wanted to try my hand at painting but didn’t know where to go. When a watercolor class with Jean was offered locally, I felt this was my opportunity. I already knew Jean and how talented she was. So, as a first-time art student, I didn’t know quite what to expect. Jean knows watercolor art very well, is extremely patient, is very encouraging, and never intimidates anyone. Her personality lends itself to teaching and she always made class fun. I have taken lessons from her for about 2-1/2 years and have learned much. She instilled in each of us the desire to become watercolor artists!" ~ Eleanor
"I really enjoyed Jean’s class and hated to see her leave. I was new to watercolors and Jean taught me a lot in the short time I took her class. Jean is a talented and accomplished artist and anyone would be lucky to learn from her." ~ Joan
"I enjoyed being in Jean's watercolor class - it was fun, therapeutic and meaningful. I learned that watercolor painting is very forgiving - even if you make "a mistake" or if it doesn't "turn out" like you meant it to, there is always a way to correct it. Most of all I loved the inspiration and encouragement Jean gave to each of her students. Our loss is your gain." ~ Jolene
"How very fortunate you are to have an artist of Jean's caliber in your midst! Her classes are fun; she's delightful and so encouraging to all students. This gal knows her stuff and is a storehouse of knowledge that she shares with enthusiasm. I feel so fortunate to have studied with her for two years." ~ Pat
"Jean’s classes allow students with varying abilities to paint in a relaxed positive atmosphere. I acquired new techniques and skills that I incorporate into my art thanks to Jean’s technical expertise and instruction." ~ Kathie
