ABOUT THE ARTIST
Biography
Jean Weiner was born in 1960 and grew up in northern Illinois, loving nature from an early age. Her realistic, detailed, watercolors typically carry a theme of nature and wildlife, something that inspires her and speaks to her heart.
She majored in biology while at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1982. She went on to receive her Master of Science in biomedical engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1985. She worked as a biomedical engineer/operations manager for a medical device company in north suburban Chicago until she and her husband started their family in 1991. She considers herself fortunate that she could be a stay home mom with her two children.
In 1997 her family relocated to Albany, GA when her husband received a career promotion. She has enjoyed being an active volunteer in the community, serving as the PTO president for her children's schools.
After a battle with cancer in 2003, Jean picked up her brushes again ending a 25-year hiatus from painting. She is a member of the Southern Artist League in Valdosta, GA, The Tallahassee Watercolor Society, The Georgia Watercolor Society and the Southern Watercolor Society. She currently serves as the Treasurer for the Southern Watercolor Society.
She exhibits and sells her art locally, regionally, and most recently, nationally, and has won numerous awards. She has been commissioned to do a number of paintings for private collections. Jean teaches classes locally and also conducts watercolor workshops.
Artist's Statement
My artistic ability is a gift. My battle with cancer opened my heart and soul to the importance of using this gift so that I may share it with others. Watercolor is my medium of choice because it challenges me. I typically work from several photo references to develop an original composition. I love to combine the use of soft, wet into wet, backgrounds along with crisp detailed foreground subjects. I try to choose complimentary, vibrant, colors and emphasize the lighting. Although I am just beginning my career as a professional artist, I plan to use this gift for all my remaining years, painting God’s beautiful nature, in the hope that those who pause long enough to view my art might better appreciate the beauty that surrounds us all.
